Description
When it comes to kids, we are all on the same teamthat is, trying to do what is best for kids and trying to somehow contribute to the quality of their lives. Most of us devote countless numbers of hours and sometimes our lives to (our) kids. Unfortunately, despite our good intentions we sometimes fail to act in the childs best interest.
Whether we are parents, coaches, officials, or administrators involved in childrens sport, we can and do have a direct impact on how kids view sport and how sports affect kids. Collectively, we determine whether youngsters come out, whether they have a good experience, and even whether they drop out. In essence, we determine the quality of the exposure in kids sports. Parents and coaches in particular play a critical role in influencing kids sport-related expectancies and behavior. Together, we are largely responsible for what the child expects from sports and what is expected from the child in sport.
Parents are often responsible for whether a young child goes out for a sport, and coaches are usually responsible for whether kids enjoy sports and whether they benefit from them. Both have a tremendous impact on the kinds of behavior kids display both in and out of sports. Rules which are set up by administrators and organizing committees, along with how these rules are carried out by officials (or supervisors), also have a direct effect on kids behavior.
Children learn by the example you set and by the way you respond to what they do. A childs values, attitudes, and ways of behaving are most often learned from those people who are most important to him/her. A child is continually taking the attitudes and emulating the behavior of people he admires or depends on and people who in some sense control him. Parents are the most significant models of behavior during the childs early years. Children frequently reproduce not only the behavior patterns of their parents but also such things as mannerisms, gestures, and voice inflections which the parents have never attempted to teach directly.
